Seasonal - November to March
Best Time - Depends on high tide timing
Nestled within the high-rises, refineries, dumping grounds and slums of Mumbai is this little jewel, the Sewri Bay. Relatively unknown to most residents and visitors, the mudflats here attract upward of half a million birds, including its most famous visitors, nearly 20,000 flamingos.
Birdlife International and Bombay Natural History Society both list the Sewri Bay as an Important Birding Area.
An unbelievable 12-15% of the entire South Asian population of the Lesser Flamingos winter right here in the heart of this over populated metropolis.
In addition, several other bird species can be found here, including gulls, terns and waders. The Bay is a stopover site both during the birds' southward migration (Sept - Oct) and during their northward migration (Mar - May).
Globally threatened species such as the Nordmann's Greenshank, Greater Spotted Eagle, Eastern Imperial Eagle, Oriental White-backed Vulture and Long-billed Vulture can be seen here. Extremely large numbers of stints (sometimes in flocks of 8 to 10 thousand) are seen, even up to the end of May.
