Mumbai is a haven for those interested in birding. Many species can be spotted all year round in select green patches of the city – one just needs to know where to look! Winters are especially rewarding. A large number of birds, both Indian and international, migrate to Mumbai in the winter season. The most famous ones are the flamingoes, which arrive in November, and stay until March/April. Several large flocks of waders also can be seen in winter.
Over 250 species of birds are regularly spotted in the city including kingfishers, flycatchers, magpie robins, Malabar whistling thrushes, woodpeckers, crested serpent eagles, herons, egrets, terns, painted storks, bulbuls, sand pipers, stints, plovers, shanks, ospreys, marsh harriers, etc. In spite of rampant urbanisation and habitat destruction, there are still many wooded areas, wetlands, mud flats and lakes that offer excellent birding opportunities. There is an active local birding community, with annual birding events.
About the Tour:
We offer personalized birding tours with an experienced birder, who has intimate knowledge of the various birding sites in Mumbai. The location and timing of the tour depends upon the season, tide timings, past sightings, etc. We will bring binoculars as well as a spotting scope. We offer short half day birding tours in the city and suburbs; as well as longer full-day excursions ranging further afield. If you tell us where you are staying, how much time you have, and what your interests are, we will suggest a plan with costs.
All weekends. Not recommended in the monsoons (Jun-Sep).
